Christmas Holidays

I have had a reasonably active week since being off work. I have had a mild cold for the majority of the time so I have been careful not to overdo it. I set out on christmas eve on my road bike with a vague idea of where to go for the first 6 miles or so. After that point I just followed my nose with a little help from google maps on my phone. I ended up with a nice 40 mile route avoiding all major roads with some nice gentle hills thrown in. I regret not making the most of the Derbyshire countryside when I lived here because you can go for miles on almost deserted roads. My cold got a bit worse on Christmas day so I stayed in all day and tried not to each too much chocolate but I didn't hold back when it came to seconds of roast potatoes! With family expected for boxing day I managed to sneak in the reverse of christmas eve's ride before lunch.

On Wednesday I met up with northern monkeys Al Willis and Matt Jones for a poutle around Ladybower Resevoir in the Peak District. We had a route from MBR promising to link up some of the best descents in the area. Willis had been bragging about his new found map reading skills which would need to have improved since we last tried to ford the Tyne on a Northumberland adventure. Unfortunately, while his map reading may have improved, his counting certainly hasn't. We followed the route perfectly in reverse meaning each of these fabled descents turned into a technical climb! It is safe to say Jones was not ammused! It was actually quite a good ride and there was still some good descending but the wind was pretty brutal on the climb up to the final summit. In reality, whichever way we had ridden it there would have been some significant hiking involved so I probably wouldnt bother doing the route again. I was also sporting a super-cool retro Jersey that I got for christmas from Willis.

On Thursday I met up with former team mate Andy Cockburn for a quick thrash around Thetford Forest. The terrain could not have been more different to the previous day but it was good fun to smash some turns without the fear of being blown away by a gale or falling off a cliff into a resevoir. It's also good to have a local guide make the most of all the hidden trails. To tell the truth I actually enjoyed Thetford more than the Peaks which tells you something about the type of rider I am!

The Joys of Winter

I actually can’t remember the last time I rode my bike in daylight. For the last 2 weekends I have been busy doing social stuff and I have got to the point when all I want to do is go for a bloody long ride! I can’t wait for the weekend because, with Xmas conveniently on a Sunday, I can indulge in some ‘me time’ in the Derby countryside.  Hopefully I can also fit in a couple of mountain bike rides in too. There is talk of visiting the peaks after christmas with a few friends and since the last couple of years have been snowy epics it will be nice to find some mud for a change.

Life has been made even more depressing recently with the forced addition of mudguards to my usually lightweight road bike. It’s not pleasant putting on soaking wet kit for the ride home from work so it is a necessary evil. It also makes you slightly more popular on a winter group ride if you’re not throwing a fountain of muddy water in the face of the bloke on your wheel. Still, the constant rubbing of mud guard on tyre and the far less sleek look of the bike make me long for summer when I can stick them back in the shed for a few more months. At least tomorrow is the shortest day of the year meaning the mornings will start to, all too slowly, get lighter and I can once again start to look forward to a ride where I can see the potholes I am trying to dodge.

New Sponsor! Bikefood on board for 2012

I am delighted to announce Bikefood will be fueling my mountain biking adventures for the 2012 season.

I have used Bikefood for the last 2 years while riding for the Columbia-Bikefood race team and I am thrilled that they have agreed to continue supplying me with their energy drink, bars, gel and protein powders. In my opinion they are the best products available both in terms of taste and performance.

Hopefully I can reward them for their continued support with a few more podiums next season and I am looking forward to testing out some of their pre-production goodies! You can check out their products on their website www.mybikefood.com.

December 2011

It's fairly clear by looking out of the window that it is winter and riding a bike outside is far less fun than it was only a fortnight ago. I am struggling to find the motivation to ride on my own at the moment so I am doing some good group rides on the weekends but I'm feeling a bit slack during the week. I have tried to do a bit of running and keep saying I'll go swimming for some cross training but both are dull and result in pain the next day so I have not yet acted on this. Maybe next week! I feel sorry for Emma, and actually any cycling widows, because my motivation to do anything, tidy up, shave, go to work, even get up in the morning, is seriously lacking. Without training and racing I am not great company! Mind you, neither is she without her horse so at least it works both ways with us!
My mood is lifted slightly when I consider that it is only a couple of weeks until the turn of the year and I can start training again. The plan from there is to start putting in some big miles on the weekends and riding to work with the hope of recovering some of my endurance which has been severely lacking this season.
With the race dates, as they appear to be, all crammed into the first half of next season, I am considering setting myself a new goal for later in the year. The final XC race looks to be early August giving me at least a month before the Kielder100. I'm not sure if it's possible to become a marathon racer in that time but I may have to give it a go. There are also rumors of a National Marathon Champs next year but they haven't been specific enough to suggest a date for that yet so I will have to wait and see how that falls.
Over the next few weeks and months I will also try to add a bit more content to this site/website and add some reviews of the kit I use. I will also keep it updated with any sponsor related news as and when I get it. At the moment I have a couple of personal sponsors but I am always on the look out for more!
